You will be surprised at how few companies do any form of reference checking at all. For those that are done, the party giving the reference rarely gives an accurate reference upon which to base an opinion. Headhunters and recruitment agencies are no better and normally complicate the matter. Their motivation is based around successful placements and anything which gets in the way of that (such as the truth) is generally considered a nuisance. We have incredible in-depth knowledge to improve the likelihood of that person being a success in your organisation. Even we don't get it right every time but we dramatically improve the chances.

Why do we do this?
Some time ago, a client came to us as they were looking to replace a staff member that we have shown to be ineffective. They had a short-list of 4, of which 3 had all worked for the same company. All those 3 claimed to have sold in that company's largest deal. Our client asked us to find out which one was telling the truth. We probed and discovered that none of them were telling the truth. 2 of them hadn't didn't even join that company until after the business had been won. The other 1 had been but had no client contact and had only a small part in the bid-writing process. We then performed a number of other checks to determine whether we'd missed something. We hadn't. The client then asked us to do additional checks and we found resumes which bore little resemblence to their actual careers. One of the candidates had worked for 6 companies which weren't included on her resume.
